Red Baron

The Red Baron was designed and built to compete in the 2nd Round of www.chopperbicycle.net 's Bicycle Build Off 2 after we had successfully won our heat of Round 1 with "Lightning Strikes".

The inspiration was the legendary German World War I fighter pilot Manfred Von Richthofen who is now commonly referred to as the "Red Baron", after the colour of his Blood Red Fokker Triplane and the 1960's novelty Pop record "Snoopy and the Red Baron".

This theme allowed me to utilise a wide variety of Iron (or Maltese) Cross styled bicycle parts such as Pedals, Chainwheel and Valve Caps as well as custom touches such as the Iron Cross incorporated into the Frame head and the Machine Gun.

The Frame itself is a fairly traditional long forked Chopper design although it incorporates a few different ideas such as utilising a pair of BMX forks to mount the rear wheel to give a clean and uncluttered look and separate handle bars mounted to fork extensions on each side of the steer tube.

Fabrication and painting were fairly straightforward and we finished off the detailing of the frame by applying transfers displaying the name "Red Baron" and the registration number of one of Richthofen's original planes.

Wheels are 20" ACS 'Z' BMX Mags with 20 x 2.125 Maxxis "Gussett Pimp" tyres.

Although we were eventually beaten in Round 2 of the Build Off by another bike I was personally very pleased with the way the bike turned out and the reaction it has received, both on the CBN website and when riding it around.
